You learn quickly that it’s all about the guests

The guest experience is everything at Disney. That’s drilled into you from day one. Melendy said that, even though her job consisted of working in retail in Frontierland, she was encouraged not to stand behind the register whenever possible.

Instead, cast members are directed to spread some magic by passing out stickers, fast passes, birthday pins, and free bags and shirts…

Name tags are an absolute must — even if you’re using an alias

Melendy said it’s considered “bad show” for a cast members to not wear a name tag. But if you lose your tag, no worries. There’s a whole stockpile of gender neutral names like Chris, Sam, and Pat to choose from.

“I lost my first name tag, so I was Chris from New York for two weeks while I waited for my new one,” she said…

If the guests can see you, you’re technically ‘onstage’

And all cast members, from the person dressed as Mickey Mouse to the person working the register at one of the park’s gift shops, must stay “in character” onstage.

“That would mean that your costume is correct, your name tag is on, and your pin lanyard is on — we would trade pins with guests,” she said. “They very much stressed that this is an experience. It’s not your experience, it’s the guest’s experience. You have to provide the best show that you can. It’s stepping into a role.”

Fox said that, for cast members, talking about your personal life and arguing is not an option. Anything that will “break the spell” of the Disney experience, so to speak, is out…

PESERVANCE & How to Develop “Grit” in Your Kids: 3 Rules by #UPenn #psychologist #AngelaDuckworth

“A UPenn psychologist uses the ‘Hard Thing Rule’ to teach her kids to take control of their success” by Shana Lebowitz, Business Insider Magazine, 5/8/16.

…Angela Duckworth, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania whose new book, “Grit,” offers research and anecdotal evidence on how passion and perseverance lead to success.

Towards the end of the book, Duckworth gives readers a glimpse into how she applies her findings on grit in her own life, specifically with her two daughters…

The Hard Thing Rule has three parts:

1. Everyone in the family has to do something that’s hard.

Specifically, Duckworth said, it has to be “something that requires practice, something where you’re going to get feedback telling you how you can get better, and you’re going to get right back in there and try again and again.”

2. You have to finish what you start.

“…Or if I’ve paid the tuition for your set of piano lessons, you’re going to take all those lessons and you are, as you promised your teacher, going to practice for those lessons.”

3. No one gets to pick the hard rule for anyone else.

“Even when my kids were five [and] six years old,” Duckworth said, “they were given some choice in what their hard thing was.”

“I think it’s very important to send the message that, while parents are needed to remind you to practice and occasionally force you to finish things … they also need to learn to respect you. You as an individual ultimately are the captain of where you’re going…”

The point is for parents to help their kids find something they’re interested in and then help grow that interest, while at the same time modeling grit and showing how far it can take you.

HIRING & Why People Like to Hire People Like Themselves

Commentary by Dr. Whitesel:  A student once asked about why I require students to utilize 3-5 outside scholarly sources to support their statements.  I do this for two reasons.  First, a graduate school is based upon research, so students must not just conjecture but actually support their ideas from the words of juried scholarly sources. Secondly I require 3-5 sources (per week only) because scholarly sources are so easy to find today.  Let me give an example before we delve into the issue of hiring.

First, here is a student’s statement (with thesis) and my response regarding how (in less than 3 seconds) I found a juried (i.e. scholarly) source to support their thesis.

The student said:

Thank you (name) for your resource and thoughts on my post. I think that is a hard thing to do for a few reasons. First people want those that are less confrontational and sub-consciously pick those that are like them.

I responded:

Good comment (name).  I agree. But, to earn even more points, be sure to a cite a scholarly source for the following thesis you stated, “First people want those that are less confrontational and sub-consciously pick those that are like them (source __________).”

… Drawing from 120 interviews with employers, as well as participant observation of a hiring committee, Kellogg School of Management professor Lauren Rivera has found that hiring managers want recruits who have the potential to be friends.

“Hiring is more than just a process of skills sorting,” writes Rivera. “It is also a process of cultural matching between candidates, evaluators, and firms. Employers sought candidates who were not only competent but culturally similar to themselves.”

In other words, you have the same tastes, experiences, leisure pursuits, and social markers as the person across the table.

Rivera’s research found that companies might have notable levels of demographic diversity — it’s not only white dudes who work there — but still have deep-level homogeneity. Folks might have different skin colors, but they still grew up in the same handful of zip codes, attended the same elite colleges, and play the same sports…

READING & Your ability to read this message reveals something incredible about the mind #BusinessInsiderMagazine

The above passage, written in a combination of letters and numbers, has been circulating social media for years and purports that only certain “strong minds” can read it.

That’s not exactly true — just about everybody can read the message with ease. But according to one scientist, our ability to read such messages reveals something pretty incredible about the brain.

Interpreting passages like this hardly activates the section of the brain associated with numbers, Jon Andoni Duñabeitia, part of a team of Spanish cognitive scientists who wrote five papers on thesubject, told Business Insider. Instead, our brain knows to treat them like letters based on their similar appearance.

“While reading, you dont pay attention to the difference between a number and a letter because you only expect letters,” Duñabeitia said.

As people read the message, they’re able to decode the oddly shaped “letters” in a matter of milliseconds because the human brain essentially treats the digits like letters written by someone with bad handwriting or in an unusual typeface, Duñabeitia said.

“For your brain, it’s not a number in a word, it’s a wrongly written or strangely written letter,” Duñabeitia said. “You are in this mode of tolerance that allows for small distortions in the identity of the letters.”

The phenomenon is nothing new. Netizens from the early days of the Internet are well familiar with “1337” or “leet speak,” an alternative alphabet used by online communities to evade detection by search engines. Duñabeitia also cited promotional emails that would advertise products like “v1agra” to get around spam filters.

Although, there may be some truth to the idea that some people are more adept at reading leet speak than others, he said.

Young people, who have grown up using computers with endless typographical choices, may find it second nature. On the other hand, an older person, likely raised using standardized curive, could find deciphering these messages a little tougher.

“But as long as we are proficient readers, we won’t have a problem,” he said.

DIVERSIFIED MULTIPLICATION & Why Church Leaders Are Missing the Healthiest Growth Strategy

Commentary by Dr. Whitesel: General Electric, probably one of the most siloed companies in America, is restructuring to create a “horizontal organization” that better shares its assets. This is the “diversified multiplication” model that I’ve been advocating for years (along with organizational scientists). It means rather than launching competitive organizations (such as independent church plants) or siloing departments within an organization (as we do with multiple campuses), it requires diversifying – while sharing as many assets as possible. GE is undergoing the most radical transformation in its 124-year history, by Robert Stephens, Business Insider, 1/13/15.

…A key reason for this potential is GE’s focus on breaking down the walls between its different divisions, which, in the past, have generally operated on a nearly mutually exclusive basis.

Through the adoption and focus on the GE Store, the company is intent on developing its horizontal capabilities through shared innovation, with technological advancements, ideas, and support from one part of the business being made available across all parts of the business.

Undoubtedly, such a scheme has little value when the different divisions have limited common ground. For example, GE’s consumer credit arm, Synchrony, had little to share with GE’s healthcare department, and vice versa.

However, with the company disposing of multiple financial assets, including Synchrony, as it seeks to become an industrial company that is enhanced rather than dominated by its capital arm, scope for a more collaborative, value-added approach is likely to enhance innovation, productivity, and, most important, profitability.

GE is well on the road to generating its targeted 75% of profit from its industrials division, with the remainder to be derived from its capital division.

This split makes good sense, since GE envisions a world in which financial volatility, geopolitical uncertainty, and development opportunities in the developing world are emphasized in future years.

To take advantage of those factors, GE must innovate, become more productive, and tap into the $70 trillion that is forecast to be spent on global infrastructure between 2014 and 2030…

MULTIPLICATION & For Church Planging Here’s the fastest growing town in every state #USCensus

The US Census Bureau just released estimates of the population in every town, city, and village in the United States as of July 1, 2014. Using those estimates, we found the town in each state with the largest per cent increase in population between 2013 and 2014.

Here’s the map of the fastest growing towns in each state (click to enlarge):

There’s an asterisk next to Honolulu, and this is because that city is the only town in Hawaii measured by the Census Bureau, making it win by default.
