Commentary by Dr. Whitesel: From where did the landed-gentry, the lords and ladies of England emerge? It was the result of the Norman conquest, an invasion of England by William the conqueror who gave to faithful soldiers large tracts of land which became the English castle and estate system. The Bayeux Tapestry, a 230 foot-long embroidered tapestry, is an 11th century depiction of that century’s invasion which created the English class system we know today.
